In First Peter, chapter one, verses thirteen through sixteen, we are told, “So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy”.
These verses encapsulate the change that happens when we accept the Salvation Christ offers us through repentance and forgiveness of our transgressions. He promises us that he will cleanse and purify our souls if we repent of our sins and commit to a life of obedience to his principles, which are his teachings in the New Testament.
Once we accept Christ as our Savior it means that we abandon our old life of self-driven behavior and we begin to progress toward an existence that is totally motivated by love for others and for God and Christ. In my experience it has been a sea change of having the standards of God and Christ applied to my life and coming to understand just how wrong-headed my old ways of thinking were.
It has been a slow and painful series of changes to my life and with each bit of progress I can see how far Christ and God have brought me but I also am able to see more clearly how lost I was and how far I still have to go.
I understand why were are told above to put our hope in Salvation because when I interacted with Christ as the consciousness of the sun while using a legal substance over a few years I was so enraptured by his presence every time he would come visit me. I understand what it is like to be swallowed up in this golden radiant light and to have his love surrounding me and seemingly enveloping me from all sides.
I know why the writer tells us to think of this and let go the things of the world, because nothing on earth compares to that blissful feeling of being surrounded by this holy light. This is how we will feel when we are with Jesus permanently, and I hope that everyone will make the choice to accept him into your life and allow him to wrap you in his peace, comfort, and protection, and slowly shift your focus from the things of the world to the tranquility and love that he and God are made of.
