In Philippians chapter one, verse 27, Paul writes, “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.” Paul says so much in this short sentence. He is telling us that when we repent to Christ of our transgressions and ask his forgiveness, and commit to a life of obedience to Christ’s teachings, we need to begin to live as if we have already died and gone to heaven.
Though this is a short passage, it really inspires us to contemplate what heaven is and what it means to behave as if we already live there. When I interacted with Christ as the consciousness of the Sun over several years while using a legal substance, I experienced being surrounded in a presence of pure, unfiltered love, something I had never felt before.
Being swept up in this overwhelming sense of love tempered all the angst that I normally felt. I felt perfectly at peace, full of love and understanding for other people, and had an overwhelming sense of benevolence. When I was in this state it was easy to love, to forgive, to embrace kindness.
Paul is telling us that this is how we are to strive to live every day, as if we are wrapped in the radiant presence of Christ at all times and connected to this love. It can be really hard to do when we are in conflict or disagreement with others, or are feeling physical symptoms like hunger or anger or fatigue, or are just caught up in the stresses of life.
But Paul reminds us that to be a follower of Christ is to always be striving to reach his holiness, to always be extending ourselves toward his purity, light, and love, so that we can become more and more like him and less controlled by our whims and ego drives. When we accept Salvation through Christ, we invite him into our lives to direct our path away from things that endanger our soul, so we need to remember that Christ is with us on every step of our journey, leading us on the path to our eventual perfect union with him.
