“Roots that reach deep into the water”

Jeremiah 17, verses seven and eight says, “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”

This verse gave me such peace tonight when I read it. Reading Jeremiah can be overwhelming at times because of the calamity forecast to be visited upon the Israelites, but this verse was like a soothing balm when I read it.

God repeatedly implores the Israelites to stop worshipping pagan Gods that are not even real and to come back to their trust in him as Sovereign Lord. Christ tells us the same thing in the Gospels in many different ways, that God has sent him to earth to show us how to live, and if we accept the Salvation he offers us through repentance and forgiveness of sin, and commit to obey his teachings, then we can live a life of peace like the one God describes above.

I love the pastoral imagery of the trees with their roots deep in his living water, and how he tells us that they are not bothered by the heat because of the soothing water flowing around them. This is how God wants to live, seeking his truths and growing more in the likeness of Christ every day of our lives, so that we can experiences spiritual peace, until the day when he takes our souls home to heaven.
