In Colossians chapter three, verses one and two, Paul writes, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of the earth.”
This line really struck me this morning when I read it, because it seems that lately I have found myself really distracted by the things of this world. Maybe it is the challenge of the summer heat, and new challenges at work, but I have felt weighed down in a way and have felt a bit of loss of focus.
I think we are more challenged in this time in history than humans have been in ages past to keep our eyes on Jesus and the spiritual aspects of life. We have so many distractions due to having smartphones and computers and other sources of media that are filled with content and advertising that constantly vies for our attention.
Most of this is profit-motivated, and in competition with other sources to gain our direct attention. Very little of it is helpful to us in a real way, and can actually become a problem in itself because we have so much access to instant news and information.
Paul is telling us here that as followers of Jesus we need to remain focused on our Salvation, and living a life devoted to Christ. We need to make sure that our primary concern is obeying the teachings of Christ and sharing our testimony of Jesus with others.
We can make our lives a testimony to Christ by following his commandment to love others as ourselves and love God with all our heart. The Bible has a lot of verses that encourage us to give service to the poor and disadvantaged as well, and makes it clear that these are important concepts for Christians to apply to our lives. Even though we have many different sources clamoring for our focus, Paul is reminding us to keep our sights set on heaven, and our hearts devoted to emulating Christ and God in all that we do.
