“Confident hope”

In Romans 15, verse 13, Paul writes, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

I really needed to read these verses tonight. I had a hard night at work, and I lost my temper over something. I opened my Bible tonight after I got home, and my eyes fell on these words. Immediately I felt a sense of peace come over me.

It is so easy to forget that the most important thing in all of our lives is Salvation through Christ. When we accept Salvation through repentance and forgiveness of our transgressions, and allow Christ to become the spiritual authority in our lives, we have made the most important decision for the life of our soul that we can make.

It is our soul that is generated by God; Christ tells us in the New Testament that God is the Father of all of our Spirits. It is our soul that outlasts our body, and goes on to its destination, either to heaven or the hell realms. Christ, who loved us so much that he incarnated on earth to teach us how to attain heaven after this life, wants so much for each of us to accept his spiritual guidance so that we can get to heaven.

When we have the confident hope in our heavenly destination that Paul talks about, we don’t have to get trapped in our ego reactions to day to day events. This is what happened to me tonight, because I lost sight of the bigger picture. When I picked up my Bible tonight these verses instantly comforted me and showed me where I went wrong; I focused my view on human matters that are fleeting and insignificant, instead of on my walk with Christ.

I can’t undo my reaction, but I can repent, as I have, and pray that God and Christ will show me the way to avoid this distraction and diversion in the future. I want to bask in the confident hope that Paul preaches about here, and not fall into the trap of obsessing about fleeting earthly concerns that don’t matter. The Bible always brings my focus back to the most important thing in life, which is the life of my soul and my Salvation through Jesus Christ.
