In Mark 12, we are told that the teachers of religious law have asked Jesus which of the commandments is the most important. Jesus replies, in verses 29 through 31, “The most important commandment is this: Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.
This is one of many instances in the Gospels where the religious authorities of the day are trying to trip Jesus up by asking him questions they are sure he can’t answer correctly, but each time they do this he flips the script on them and in doing so makes it clear how their priorities are a bit off kilter.
He tells us that we have to make God the center of our lives and love him with all our hearts, which means loving Christ in the same way, since he tells us over and over in the New Testament that he and the Father are one.
When we put God and Christ at the center of our lives, by accepting the Salvation that Christ offers us through repentance and forgiveness of sin, then love for others follows that directive because we dedicate our lives to emulating them and their great love for us and for all beings.
Once we accept Christ into our lives after we have repented and been forgiven our transgressions against self and others, Jesus will begin to show us how to live a life with him and God at the center of our spirit, so that we can draw closer and closer to them. Even though we are fallible human beings, living a life in which we attempt to live by their standards instead of human standards gives us a goal and a new focus on how we want to live in this world.
Instead of being influenced by the superficial values of the human world, we are drawn to the pure love that God and Christ emulate, and we pray for the strength to meet their lofty standards. It was such a relief to me, when I interacted with Christ as the consciousness of the sun for several years while using a legal substance, to find that Christ and God are love itself, and that love is the beginning point and the central value of a life dedicated to and lived for Jesus Christ.
