“Give up your own way”

In Mark chapter 8, verses 34 and 35, Jesus tells us, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and the sake of the Good News, you will save it.”

These are simple verses but they say so much. When I experienced Christ as the consciousness of the Sun while using a legal substance I didn’t quite understand these concepts. I recommitted my life to Christ and I thought that would consist of going to church and reading the Bible but I didn’t think there was that much wrong with me that I would have to change.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. God and Christ have asked me to change just about everything about my life. Progress has been slow, and the changes have been sequential, but they  have asked me to let go of one thing after another after another. I sometimes feel like my life has been turned upside down.

What it comes down to, I feel, is that Christ endured such incredible suffering in order to give us Salvation by spiritually cleansing our souls when we ask for forgiveness. He did not do this so that we could remain stagnant or regress back into behaviors that endanger our souls.

He wants us to honor the depth of his sacrifice for us by making sure that we continue to grow in his likeness and not stand still. Things I did when I first had my experiences are unthinkable to me now. Others have been harder to let go of and hanging on to them has caused me great pain, just as the verses testify to. Christ demands that we submit our lives to him, and that we lay down our lives as we know them and follow his lead, so that he can guide us to our Heavenly home.
