“The least of these”

In Matthew 25, verses 31 through 39, Jesus talks about how things will be after his second coming; in verse 32 he says, “All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left”.¬† In the verses that follow this, we are told that Jesus will say to those on his right hand that they had fed him, given him a drink, given him clothing, and cared for him when he was sick. When those people whom he has chosen ask him when this happened, Jesus replies, in verse 40, “I tell you the truth, when you did it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!”

This is such a beautiful set of verses, and it is another example of how Jesus continually reminds us to think of those less fortunate than us and to reach out to them in their times of need. He commands us in the Gospels to love others as ourselves, and he wants our lives to be a testimony to the deep and abiding love that he has for all of us. I experienced this love when I interacted with him while using a legal substance over several years; Jesus came to me as the consciousness of the Sun and surrounded me in his peace, radiant light, and deep unconditional love. This was the most blissful feeling I have ever had, and I had these consistent interactions with him over and over again.

This is the love that Jesus feels for us and that he wants for us to channel through our hearts to other people. He wants us to testify to the Salvation that he offers all of us if we repent to him of our transgressions and ask his forgiveness, and he wants us to live lives that reflect his deep love and compassion for every human being so that our Salvation through Christ will be evident to other people. When we live our lives as Christ wants us to live them, bringing his love for us through our hearts to all other beings, we connect to him in a sacred way that is like a living prayer, and we can be assured that we are emulating his divinity, mercy, and perfect peace.
