In Matthew chapter 12, Jesus and his disciples were walking through some grainfields and began eating some of the grain. Some Pharisees confronted them, because it was the Sabbath, and Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath? I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple! But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”
In these verses Jesus really drives home to the religious teachers the heart of his commandment to us to love others as ourselves. He wants us to act with love and kindness to our fellow human beings, extending the love of God through our hearts to them, instead of adhering to laws that would have us to act contrary to his commandments.
I was amazed and thrilled when I interacted with Jesus while using a legal substance and found myself surrounded by his presence of love and peace over and over again. I was so amazed that someone could be so full of love, compassion, and tenderness toward me, as someone who had blasphemed against him and God terribly. But he seemed to love me no matter what I had done in the past, and seemed only to want to comfort me and surround me in his golden light.
Jesus wants all of us to feel the deep love he has for us, and for us to accept his gift of spiritual Salvation by repenting of our transgressions against ourselves and others and asking forgiveness. He wants us to apply his commandment to love others as ourselves to our lives on a daily basis, and show mercy and compassion to those around us, because that what he would do. If we try to emulate his amazing depth of love and compassion for everyone, we will follow a path of spirituality that doesn’t damage our soul, and with his guidance and wisdom he will bring us to our heavenly home in the end.
