In John 17, verses 22 through 24, Jesus is praying to God for his disciples, and he says, “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began.”
In these verses, Jesus’ passion for his message and his love for his disciples comes through so strongly. Here again, as in prior chapter, Jesus uses the word ‘in’ where we might expect him to say ‘with’; he makes it clear that when we accept the Salvation he offers us through repentance and forgiveness of sin, we are literally accepting him into our very being.
He repeats in these verses, as he referenced in prior verses, that God is in him, and this is the exact relationship that he wants his followers to have with him as well. When I interacted with Christ as the consciousness of the Sun, our star, while using a legal substance over a few years, I literally felt him surround me with his presence, wrapping me in his golden light and giving me a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to describe in words, so deep was the love and compassion that I felt surrounding me on all sides and into the very core of my being.
It is this blissful feeling of over-awing love that Christ came here to Earth to give us the means to attain. He loves us all so deeply that he submitted himself to horrible suffering in order to bring us an explicit message of how to have our souls purified of our transgressions and begin a life as a follower of his teachings, so that our souls will ascend to heaven, either when we pass on from this life or when he comes to Earth to collect his followers.
In these chapters in the book of John, Jesus’ compassion for all of us overrides his fear of what is about to happen to him. Just to contemplate this measure of love is mind-boggling, to think of how deep and strong his love for us must have been, that he would face such incredible torment in order to bring us all into the protection of his being, to offer us purification of our souls and a path to righteousness in order to be able to join him and God one day in our heavenly home.
