“Don’t let your hearts be troubled”

In John 14, verses one through four, Jesus tells his disciples, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

I really felt comforted by these verses when I read them tonight. Though these verses have a sad context, because Jesus says this to the disciples when he is preparing for his execution, his mercy and compassion come through even in his distress at what is about to happen.

When I read these lines tonight I felt very soothed by the concern in his words to his disciples. Even when he is facing unspeakable events, Jesus gives his care and compassion to his followers. He is focusing on their fear and uncertainty, and assuring them that they need to trust in him and in God, and that everything will be fine in the end.

He went through this suffering that he experienced in order to bring to humanity the message of Salvation through repentance and forgiveness of sin, and his ordeal on Earth is a testimony to the love of God and Christ for all of us. Christ endured all of this so that we would have his teachings to guide us during our earthly journey, and in living a life of obedience to him, we are able to follow the path  he laid for us. If we accept his Salvation and obey his commandments and teachings, he promises us that he will receive us in our heavenly home, to dwell in the safety and protection of his unconditional love.
