In John 9, verses 3 through 5, Jesus is responding to a question from his disciples about why a man he was about to heal was born blind. They ask if it was because of his sins or those of his parents, and Jesus replies, “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins. This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned to us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jesus says quite a bit here, in just a few short verses. He tells us that this man has a hardship that God is using as a vehicle to show the power of God, so that others will be encouraged to put their faith and trust in God. It really makes us reframe our point of view about the troubles we encounter, to think that God may be using our hardships to show others how powerful and merciful he truly is.
Then in the next verses, Jesus warns us that ‘the night is coming’ and by this he may mean a time on earth when things are not going to be as smooth; he may be referring to some of the apocalyptic events that are talked about in prophecy throughout the Bible and in Revelations. This is why Christ wants us to testify to others of what we know and have experienced of him and God, so that others will be drawn to the Salvation that Christ offers.
The last line, where Christ says, “I am the light of the world” is so beautiful to me. I always feel heartened whenever I read this expression in one form or another in the Gospels. When I interacted with Christ while using a legal substance over a few years, it was as the consciousness of the Sun, our star. In our first interaction, Jesus healed some pain in my side that was lingering from a prior surgery, and he surrounded me in his healing light and peace and allowed me to feel a depth of peace that I had never felt before.
This is the peace and serenity that he offers to everyone; if we submit to his spiritual authority and repent of our transgressions and ask forgiveness, he will cleanse and purify our souls and come into our hearts and begin to guide our lives in the direction of spiritual purity. I hope everyone will allow Christ into their lives to do this, and begin a life of obedience to Christ and God.
