In Psalm 62, verses five through eight, David writes, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge; a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.”
I felt so calmed reading these lines tonight, like I always do when I read the Psalms. It has been a rough day today, and I have felt tossed about by the waves. I think I am going in one direction, and then everything changes and I end up going in a completely different direction.
I have found, since I came back to God and Christ after interacting with them while using a legal substance over a few years, that God’s plan for me can be erratic and change suddenly sometimes. I sometimes feel that he will see how willing I am to do something, and sometimes when he is satisfied I am willing, he will then reverse course, just like in the story of Isaac and Abraham.
This has happened to me several times, and and I am getting used to God wanting me to demonstrate my willingness to follow his direction. He seems to guide me in the ‘mysterious ways’ that I always heard people talk about when I was growing up and they would say “God works in mysterious ways”.
What I am learning is that what David says, to ‘trust in him at all times’ is so true. It seems that no matter what, God is asking me to trust in him and his will for me, and he demonstrates over and over again how much I need to trust in him and follow the directions on the path he has laid for me. The longer I travel down this path, the more it becomes clear to me that I just need to pray to discern his will for me and do my best to carry it out, and trust in him to show me the next step on the journey.
