“A thankful heart”

In Colossians 4, verses 2 through 6, Paul writes, “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should. Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”

This is another example of Paul’s dedication to spreading the message of Salvation through Christ, that even though he is writing from prison, he is still taking every opportunity to help others along on their walk of faith.

He tells us to devote ourselves to prayer, and devote is a very strong word. He reminds us to be thankful, and this is something that helps me instantly whenever I am feeling down about some situation or the other in my life.

Whenever I start counting my blessings and looking back at the times that I have been doubtful about God’s will for me, but eventually saw the wisdom of God’s plan, it helps me to have faith that whatever circumstance is currently troubling me will work out for my benefit just as the others have.

It is something that I have to remind myself to do, and these verses are a great reminder for me that I have so much to be thankful for. Few of us will ever sacrifice as much as Paul did in his devotion to Jesus, and reading his words is a wonderful reminder of just how much I have been blessed, and how God’s wisdom always shows itself in my life when I least expect it.
