“The realities of heaven”

In Colossians chapter 3, verses one through three, Paul writes, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in his glory.”

These verses from Paul are very inspiring to me tonight. Paul is telling us in no uncertain terms that we need to keep our focus on our spiritual life and the life after this world. He says elsewhere in his writings that his interest in this world has died and the world’s interest in him has died.

Of course we know that Paul’s writings became a large part of the New Testament so many people have drawn great inspiration from his words, but he means that after his vision on the road to Damascus and the connection to Christ and God that he received from them, he began a life devoted to them and to the life of the spirit, or soul, and bringing other people to Christ through his preaching.

When we follow Paul’s advice and accept Salvation from Christ through repentance and forgiveness of sin, we find that we receive a peace from God and Christ that is not found in the secular world. Paul tells us that this is the world we need to be concerned about, following Christ’s commandment to love God with all our hearts and love others as ourselves, and in this way we will achieve not only spiritual salvation, but a peace that can’t be rivaled by earthly pleasures.
