In Luke 18, verses 20 through 22, a very rich man is questioning Jesus about how get to heaven when he dies. Jesus says, “…You know the commandments: You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.”
The man replies to Jesus in verse 21, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
In verse 22, when Jesus hears this, he says to the man, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
This is another set of verses in the Bible where Jesus makes it clear that materialism and greed have no value in the heavenly realms. He wants us to put the state of our soul before everything else in our lives.
He wants us to follow his teachings and the teachings of God that are laid out in the Bible. He wants us to accept Salvation from him by repenting of our sins and asking forgiveness of him. He wants us to accept the spiritual authority that he and God offer us, so that they can guide us on the right path for our souls.
But he makes it clear that accumulating wealth on earth, or more specifically living a life geared toward the accumulation of wealth, is of no spiritual value whatever, and can even be destructive to our souls. He wants to make this clear to us, that spiritual riches have nothing to do with monetary gain.
Instead, he wants us to focus on living a spiritual life that is in obedience to his and God’s commandments, and to rely on God to provide for us. We of course have to work and support ourselves, but we have to have Christ and God at the center of our lives, and from there they will lead us in the direction that is the best for the life of our souls.
