In Psalm 36, verses 5 through 9, David writes, “Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house; letting them drink from your river of delights. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.”
I think these verses are so beautiful, in how David includes the natural world in his writing about his reverence for God. I feel this every morning when I go out and watch the birds at the feeder, watching all the differed feathered birds take their turn at grabbing the sunflower seeds.
I do believe God’s love for us is echoed in the beauty of the natural world, and how God has designed it so beautifully. In the warm months, especially, I love how every day I seem to see a new creature that I have never seen before or even knew existed. One day last summer I was stung or bitten by a brown saddleback caterpillar, which had the most beautiful lime green spot on its belly. I was lifting up a tarp and were it not for the sharp sting that caught my attention I would have never thought to look under the tarp and see what was there.
I was so awed at the beauty of this tiny creature and the interplay of its beautiful colors. The lime green spot circled by a white disc and framed by the most peaceful brown outline really lifted my spirits that day. Every time something like this happens I can’t help but wonder what else there is out there in the world, that God has designed so beautifully, just waiting for me to happen upon.
