“Keep your lamps burning”

In Luke 12, verses 35 through 38, Jesus tells us, “Be dressed for service, and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready, to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks. The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them when they sit and eat. He may come in the middle of the night, or just before dawn. But whenever he comes, he will reward the servants who are ready.”

Jesus is telling us to always be prepared for his second coming, no matter what we are doing in our lives. He wants us always to keep this at the forefront of our minds, and to live lives that are pleasing in the his sight.

When I read these verses I wondered to myself what it meant to ‘be ready’ for the return of Jesus Christ. I know that it means that we have to put him first in our lives, before everything else. Jesus wants us to love him above all others and to submit to his spiritual authority, and that of God as well, so that we can live lives in which we are unlikely to go down a path that is dangerous to our soul.

If we are living life by his commandment to love others as ourselves, and to love God with all our hearts, then we will be living with love at the forefront of our lives. When I interacted with Christ and God while using a legal substance over a few years, they seemed to me to be made of love itself. Jesus came to me as the consciousness of the Sun, and emanated a love so deep that it is really not possible to describe it in words. He wants us to accept his offer of Salvation through repentance and forgiveness of sin, and continue to repent to him whenever we transgress so that he can purify our souls continually.

When we have this relationship with him after accepting him into our hearts, he will come into our lives and give us direction about what habits and behaviors we need to change to draw closer to him and God. He will always be with us, letting us know in little ways what things we need to walk away from in order to constantly draw closer to him. When we follow his direction in our lives, and repent when we stumble off of the path, we are constantly readying ourselves to be in his presence, whether that happens upon our passing from this life or in the event he comes back in our lifetimes.
