In Philippians chapter 2, verses 14 and 15, Paul tells us, “Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”
These simple verses from Paul are really inspiring, but this is no small order. It is hard to even get through a single day sometimes without complaining about something or other. Paul really gives us a lofty goal here in the first verse, to try to keep our speech completely positive. This alone may require constant attention on our parts.
He also tells us to live clean, innocent lives. We have to remember that everything we do as followers of Christ reflects on him and will either draw people to him, or turn them away from him. The last thing we want to do is turn people away from their potential salvation through Jesus because of our behavior.
I interacted with Jesus as the consciousness of the Sun while using a legal substance over a few years, and ‘clean’ and ‘innocent’ are definitely two of the words I would use to describe him. I have never felt such purity and sacredness as when I was in his presence, nor such a depth of unconditional love.
Paul tells us elsewhere in his writings to ‘bring honor to Christ’ with our behavior, and when I was in his presence I understood why; it is because he is so purely holy and divine that we don’t want to besmirch his honor by behaving in a way that is not worthy of him. None of us are perfect, but we can trust in Jesus enough to let him direct our path to ways of living that are as much a reflection of his divinity as human beings can possibly achieve.
