In Philippians chapter 3, verses 2 through 4, Paul writes, “Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. ”
This is a topic that Paul tackled quite a bit; it was one of the divisive issues in the early church and something that he was always settling disputes about. I am glad that he confronted this directly in these verses as in others and even uses the word “mutilators” to describe the act of genital mutilation.
To me it is heartbreaking that these acts happen to both male and female infants and children alike. I know that God designed the human body as perfectly functioning as it is, and he is the most wise of all beings.
Why humanity thinks that we can possibly improve on God’s design, especially by such cruel and barbaric means, is beyond me. God does not need human help to display his genius and his exquisite artistry; all one has to do to know this is to look around at the beauty of the natural word, and conversely, how messed up it can become when humans interfere with it.
Paul is to be applauded by his very progressive views and his unwavering stand against mutilating the genitalia of children. I hope that one day these practices of circumcision and female genital mutilation will be wiped from the face of the earth, and that never again will anyone dare attribute them to God’s will.
