“They make him known”

In Psalm 19, verses, one through four, David writes, “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their messages has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”

I love these verses because they talk about the beauty of the natural world and God’s creation. This weekend when I was at my cousin’s house I saw three blue-jays land on her backyard fence first thing in the morning. I love these beautiful birds and their sculpted beauty, their little blue caps are so precise and it reminds me that nothing in God’s world is accidental, especially the precision of his creations.

Then yesterday as I was walking my dog down by the creek, I saw a bluebird up in the trees. I rarely get to see these birds anymore; it seems they used to be a lot more common but now a sighting is rare. I was filled with gratitude at having actually seen one; it is the first one I have seen in a very long time.

I have the same feeling whenever I look up at the stars at night and see all of them shining and twinkling. I can’t help but feel awestruck; I am fortunate to live in a place now where there is sufficient darkness at night to be able to see them well without a lot of light pollution. Every time I look up and see the sky full of stars I am filled with gratitude at the glory of God’s creation and how beautiful it is, just like David references in the verses above.
