“The God of peace”

In Philippians chapter four, verses eight and nine, Paul writes, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me–everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

I really love these verses from Paul, especially the words that he gives us to guide our thoughts; it is almost like reading a meditation when we let our thoughts rest on the words he uses: true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable.

I felt an immediate sense of peace when I read those words, as if a winged creature like a bird or a butterfly had landed in my heart. I know that I will return to these verses again and again just to reread these six words and allow myself to bask in the sense of peace that they have give me.

Paul doesn’t just tell us to think about them; he tells us to ‘fix our thoughts’ on them. In other words, he tells us to exert effort in keeping our thoughts on these concepts, and this means that we can bring our thoughts back to them if we find our minds drifting away. He understood that the state of our mind guides our actions, and that if we focus on these concepts, we will be more likely to conduct ourselves with love and mercy, as Christ commanded us to.
