“The Lord is always with me”

In Psalm 16, verses seven through eleven, David writes, “I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.”

I love the beauty of these verses and the confidence that David shows in God here. He takes complete comfort in knowing that he is saved by God and that God is always with him, as he is with all of us.

These verses are so overwhelmingly positive that they really lifted my heart when I read them. I understand now that this confidence that David has comes from submitting to God as our spiritual authority and continuing to make an accounting to him of our wrongs and ask forgiveness.

God sent Christ to earth to teach us this specifically, that we owe repentance to God and Jesus for the wrongs we commit against ourselves or others, and that we will be forgiven if we ask for it. We have to commit to a life of obedience to Christ and make a concerted effort to follow and live by his teachings of love for others and love for God, and show contrition for our wrongs. By doing this we achieve salvation when we stay true to the path of obedience to Christ.
