“The desires of your heart”

In Luke chapter 12, verses 33 and 34, Jesus tells us, “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart also be.”

Jesus is telling us to let go of materialism in these verses, and to let our treasures be in heaven so that our heart will be there also. He is showing us that giving love by helping others will connect us to his presence through our hearts, and that this feeling is better than accumulation of any material goods or wealth.

Most of us have experienced the serenity and bliss that giving to others and/or doing service work brings us. There is nothing that money can buy that compares with the feeling of sincerely helping a being in need, whether it is giving aid to a human being or  an animal or even something as simple as giving water to a plant. I watered a neglected pear tree outside of a gardening store a few times before I finally rescued it and brought it home and planted it, and the feeling of watching it spring into bloom is something that I will never forget, knowing that it would have died without my intervention.

Even this plant seemed grateful for my small act of charity; before I even planted it in the ground I leaned it up against the back of the house for a few days and it immediately sprouted brilliant green leaves where it previously had none. I was so pleased that I helped something that clearly wanted a chance to survive, and no purchase of any material good would have come close to the feeling of bringing this dying tree home just to give it a chance at life.

This is what Jesus is trying to tell us, that bringing his sacred love and light through our hearts into the world is a feeling that we cannot get from accumulating wealth or possessions. When we connect to the sacred life force of God and Christ and show mercy to others, we get a serenity that cannot be bought. Jesus assures us that ‘treasure in heaven’ will follow, and I imagine that being completely connected with God and Christ and having no separation between us at all is the greatest treasure of all.
