In Luke chapter 12, verses one through five, Jesus tells his disciples, “Beware the yeast of the Pharisees–their hypocrisy. The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!”
He continues, “Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do anymore to you after that. But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he’s the one to fear.”
These are very powerful verses and Jesus warns us that there will come a time when we won’t have any secrets from anyone, but that all that we have done and said will be known by all. It makes us really want to consider carefully the choices we make on a daily basis.
He also tells us in the last verses that in this human life, it is God that we should be afraid of, not other people who can only end our physical life. This is a very heavy concept, but he and his disciples lived in a very dangerous time. Jesus incarnated here to change the world in a drastic way, and he knew that he was going to suffer immensely for it. He wanted his disciples to be brave and understand that other human beings have no spiritual power over us, but God does, and it is God, in the end, that we should fear, and obey. If we obey the teachings of God and Christ, once we have repented of our sins and asked forgiveness of these sacred beings, then we don’t have to worry about what other human beings can do to us.
